What bling and rhinestone work actually is

Bling decoration is built from individual stones rather than ink or thread. The design is laid out stone by stone, arranged into the shape of your artwork, then set onto the garment with heat so each stone is fixed in place. Nothing is printed. The sparkle comes from light hitting faceted stones from different angles, which is why a bling design looks alive when someone moves and flat in a photograph.

That changes how you think about artwork. A printed design can hold any amount of detail, because ink can be as fine as a hair, while a bling design is made of discrete stones that each take up real space, so artwork has to be translated into shapes stones can describe. Bold lettering, outlines, monograms, crowns, simple icons and short words are what the method does best. Everything is applied in house in Hollywood, Florida for customers across Miami and South Florida, and we ship nationwide.

Garments that suit bling

Bling needs a flat, stable panel it can be pressed onto, and enough body in the fabric to carry the weight of the stones without sagging.

  • Tees and tanks: the most common choice, with a front chest or full front design. Cotton and cotton rich blanks from Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Comfort Colors and Shaka Wear all work.
  • Hoodies and crewnecks: heavier fleece supports a larger design better than any lightweight garment can.
  • Event and going out pieces: the natural home of the method.

Placement follows the same geometry as printing, so front, back and left chest areas are the usual spots, with sizes shown on our print placements page. Artwork for a bling design should arrive as clean vector shapes or high contrast flat art rather than a photograph, and the design guide covers how to supply files.

When bling is the wrong choice

  • Fine detail, small text and photographs. Stones cannot describe hairlines, thin serifs or a face. Artwork like that belongs on our direct to garment printing in Miami, which handles full color and photographic detail.
  • Large full color graphics. Bling renders a shape, not a picture. A detailed multicolor illustration is a printing job rather than a stone job.
  • Daily uniform programs. Staff apparel worn through heat, humidity and constant laundering is better stitched or printed. Embroidered polos and caps hold up to that routine, which is what our custom embroidery service is for.
  • Very thin or sheer fabrics. Lightweight and loosely knit garments can pull or distort under the weight of a dense stone design.
  • High volume at the lowest cost per piece. If you need hundreds of simple one color shirts and the budget is the deciding factor, screen printing will beat bling on cost every time.

Who bling is for

In South Florida much of this apparel is worn out, not just at work, so bling suits buyers whose garments need to read from across a room.

There is no minimum order, so a single piece is a real order. For larger runs and mixed programs, start at our bulk and corporate apparel orders page.

Bling compared with the other methods we offer

  • Bling and rhinestone work. Best when the garment is meant to catch the light. Bold shapes and lettering, fashion and event pieces, a premium feel on the rack.
  • Direct to garment printing. Best for full color and photographic artwork on cotton, small runs and soft hand feel, with no minimum.
  • DTF transfers. Best for polyester blends and performance fabrics that will not take DTG ink well.
  • Screen printing. Best at higher volume on designs with few flat colors.
  • Custom embroidery. Best for hats, polos, bags, jackets, aprons and beanies, and for logos that need to look permanent.

Methods combine well on one order: a rhinestone hero piece, printed tees underneath it and embroidered caps for staff.

Bling and rhinestone questions we get asked

What are rhinestone shirts?

Rhinestone shirts are garments decorated with individual faceted stones set onto the fabric with heat, rather than printed with ink. The design is built stone by stone into the shape of your artwork, which is why bold lettering and simple icons work far better than fine detail.

How much do rhinestone shirts cost?

Bling work is quoted per project, and the cost per piece falls as quantity rises. The main driver is how much of the garment the design covers, because a dense design uses far more stones and far more setting work than an outline or a word.

Do rhinestones fall off in the wash?

A properly set bling design holds up to washing and wear, which is what makes it worth buying. Turn the garment inside out, wash it in cold water, skip the high heat drying and do not iron over the stones, and the design will stay intact.

Can you put rhinestones on any shirt?

Almost any flat, stable garment panel can take rhinestones, but very thin and sheer fabrics are a poor fit because they distort under the weight of the stones. Tees, tanks, hoodies, crewnecks and canvas bags are the safest choices.

Is there a minimum order for rhinestone shirts?

There is no minimum order at Imperial Custom Apparel, so one piece is a real order. That is useful with bling in particular, because seeing one finished garment in the light tells you more than any mockup will.
