What custom embroidery actually is

Embroidery is decoration made of thread rather than ink. Before a machine touches a garment, your logo is converted into a digitized stitch file that sets the order of every stitch, the direction each area is filled and where thread colors change. The machine reads that file, not your original artwork, which is why a logo that looks simple on screen can be complicated to stitch.

Thread sits on the surface of the garment, so embroidery reads as substantial in a way printing does not. An embroidered left chest logo looks like a company that invested in its apparel, while the same logo printed can read as promotional. We run embroidery in house and keep your stitch file on record, so a reorder for three new hires stitches out the same as the jackets your team already wears. Cost follows stitch count rather than color count, and pricing is quoted per project with the cost per piece falling as quantity rises.

Garments and fabrics that suit embroidery

Embroidery belongs on structured and heavier garments. We embroider hats, polos, bags, jackets, aprons and beanies, and between those six categories you can outfit a whole staff.

  • Hats and caps: structured twill panels hold a stitched logo cleanly, and raised thread is why an embroidered cap looks finished rather than printed.
  • Polos: the default for front of house staff, because a stitched left chest mark on pique survives constant laundering.
  • Jackets and outerwear: fleece, canvas and denim take embroidery well, and heavier shells are the one place a larger stitched design makes sense.
  • Bags, aprons and beanies: canvas and heavy nylon are flat and easy to stitch, and aprons stay crisp long after a print would have dulled from heat and grease.

The more stable the fabric, the better the result. Twill, canvas, pique, fleece and denim hold their shape while the needle works. Loose single jersey and stretchy performance knits move under it, which is where puckering comes from.

When embroidery is the wrong choice

  • Full color or photographic artwork. Thread cannot blend, so gradients and photographs must be simplified into flat blocks and some logos do not survive it. That artwork belongs on our direct to garment printing service in Miami.
  • Very small text and fine detail. A needle has a minimum practical size, so hairline rules, thin serifs and small taglines fill in and turn muddy.
  • Large designs on lightweight tees. A big stitched area on thin cotton adds weight, stiffness and backing where you want softness. Large graphics on tees are a printing job.
  • Thin performance fabrics. Needle holes in a technical knit are permanent, and the stabilizer that holds the fabric steady can leave a panel feeling boardy. Those garments suit DTF transfers.
  • High volume simple graphics. If the artwork is one or two flat colors and the quantity is high, screen printing is the more sensible spend.

Who embroidery is for

The South Florida buyers who come to us for stitching share a problem: apparel has to survive heat, humidity and very frequent laundering while still looking like a brand decision. That covers hotels, resorts and clubs, where stitched polos reorder cleanly as staff change, as in our guide to hotel and resort staff uniforms, and restaurant groups running one stitch file across every location, as in restaurant group uniforms built to reorder. It also covers yacht crews, professional offices that will only wear a discreet mark on a quality polo, and trades branding caps. To outfit a team, start at our bulk and corporate apparel orders page.

Embroidery compared with the other methods we offer

  • Embroidery. Best for hats, polos, bags, jackets, aprons and beanies, and for solid color logos that need to look permanent. Priced by stitch count.
  • Direct to garment printing. Best for cotton tees, crewnecks and hoodies and for full color artwork, with no screens, no per color charge and no minimum order. More at why we print DTG.
  • DTF transfers. Best for polyester blends and performance fabrics that will not take DTG ink and should not take a needle.
  • Screen printing. Best at high volume on designs with few flat colors, where per color setup is spread across enough pieces to pay for itself.
  • Bling and rhinestone work. Best when the point of the garment is to catch the eye, for fashion pieces and events rather than daily uniforms.

The methods combine well on one order: stitched caps and polos for staff alongside printed tees for events. Sizes for the printed side are on our print placements page and file requirements are in the design guide.

Custom embroidery questions we get asked

How much does custom embroidery cost?

Custom embroidery is quoted per project, and the cost per piece falls as the quantity rises. The driver is stitch count rather than color count, so a logo filled solid with thread costs more to run than an open logo of the same size.

What is the best garment for embroidery?

Structured, heavier garments give the best embroidery results, which is why hats, polos, jackets, bags, aprons and beanies are the six categories we stitch. Stable fabrics such as twill, canvas, pique and fleece hold their shape while the needle works, so the logo sits flat.

Is embroidery better than printing?

Neither is better, they solve different problems. Embroidery wins on perceived value, on durability through heavy laundering and on structured garments such as caps and polos, and it cannot fade or peel because it is thread. Printing wins on full color artwork, photographic detail, large designs and lightweight tees.

Is there a minimum order for embroidery?

There is no minimum order at Imperial Custom Apparel, for embroidery or anything else we decorate. We will stitch a single sample so you can see your logo in thread on the actual garment before you commit, then stitch a full staff rollout from the same file.

Can you embroider a logo with gradients or a photo?

No, gradients and photographs cannot be reproduced in thread, because thread cannot blend the way ink can. Artwork like that has to be redrawn into flat areas of solid thread before it is digitized, and some logos lose too much to be worth stitching.
