Why sweatshirts raise average order value faster than anything else

A tee has a ceiling. Shoppers have a strong mental price anchor for a printed tee, and pushing past it takes brand equity most new stores do not have yet. Sweatshirts do not carry that anchor. Buyers expect to pay meaningfully more for fleece, and they do not question it.

The margin math is what matters. Say your blank plus printing cost is $12 on a tee and you sell it at $28. That is $16 gross. Now say a crewneck costs you $20 and sells at $48. That is $28 gross on the same order, the same design file, the same customer acquisition cost, and the same shipping label. You did not work harder. You sold a heavier garment.

Not every sweatshirt prints well. Direct to garment ink needs a receptive surface, and fleece varies far more than jersey does. Four things decide whether a crewneck is a good print blank.

Fabric blend

Cotton takes DTG ink best because the ink bonds into natural fibers. Polyester resists it. Most quality crewnecks are a cotton and polyester blend, which is a deliberate compromise: the poly content controls shrinkage and adds durability, the cotton content takes the print. A blend in the range of 50 percent cotton and up prints reliably. The higher the cotton content, the richer and deeper the color reproduction.

Surface smoothness

The outside face of the sweatshirt is what gets printed, and it should be a smooth, tightly knit jersey face, not a fuzzy or slubby one. The soft brushed fleece belongs on the inside. A rough or open surface scatters ink droplets, which softens edges and makes fine detail look muddy. Run a hand across the print face of any blank you are evaluating. If it feels textured, your prints will look textured.

Pilling resistance

Pilling is the small fuzzballs that form where fabric rubs, usually under the arms and along the sides. Cheap open end yarn pills within a few wears. Ring spun yarn, or a blend engineered with air jet spun poly, resists it. Pilling will not damage the print, but it makes the whole garment look worn out and it generates the kind of review that kills a listing.

Rib collar and cuff recovery

Recovery is whether the ribbing snaps back after it is stretched. A collar that goes slack after five wears makes an otherwise good sweatshirt look cheap. Look for ribbed collar, cuffs, and waistband with spandex content, and check that the collar is reinforced or taped so it does not twist. This is the single most common reason a customer decides a sweatshirt feels low quality, and it has nothing to do with your artwork.

How do prints look on fleece compared to a tee?

This is the question sellers ask most, and the honest answer is that they look slightly different and that difference is usually flattering. Fleece has more loft than jersey. The ink sits into a surface with more depth, so the print reads a touch softer at the very edges, with a rounder, more textile feel rather than the crisp graphic snap you get on a smooth ring spun tee.

What that means for your artwork:

  • Bold shapes and heavy type gain. Solid areas of color look rich and substantial on fleece. Thick lettering, large logos, and blocky graphics are the strongest performers.
  • Hairline detail loses. Very thin strokes at final print size, tiny serif text, and fine engraving style linework can soften. Add weight before you send the file.
  • Gradients hold well on a good blend, but heavy photographic detail with lots of micro contrast reads better on a tee.
  • Darker colorways print with a white underbase, which sits the artwork slightly higher on the surface. Colors stay accurate and vivid.

The practical rule: design for the sweatshirt first at full scale, then check that it still works shrunk onto a tee. Bold artwork survives both directions. Delicate artwork only survives one.

Print area and placement strategy

  • July and August: build and list. Get products live, photographed, and indexed before demand arrives. Search rankings and platform listings need time to season.
  • September and October: demand ramps. This is when ad spend on fleece starts returning, and when back to campus, team, and hometown designs move.
  • November and December: peak. Sweatshirts are a gift item at a giftable price, and they hold perceived value in a way a printed tee does not.
  • January through March: steady residual demand plus cold weather regions.
  • Spring and early summer: the floor. Keep listings live, do not delist, and rotate marketing back to tees.

Because there are no minimums, you are not gambling on that curve. You list the products, and units get printed only when someone buys. If the design does not sell, you are out the design time, not the inventory.

Designing for the larger canvas

A sweatshirt front is visually different from a tee front. There is no dip from a lightweight drape, the surface sits flatter, and the ribbed waistband cuts off the bottom of the garment higher than a tee hem does. Design accordingly.

Keep your composition weighted toward the upper two thirds of the print area so the graphic sits at chest level rather than sliding toward the waistband. Build your files at 300 DPI at the actual size you want them printed, so a 12 inch wide graphic needs a file 3600 pixels wide. Save as PNG with a transparent background.
