Blank t shirt options compared for company apparel

Choosing Blanks for Company Apparel

Choosing blanks for company apparel is the decision that determines whether your staff wear the shirt or tolerate it. The print is what people notice first and the garment is what they judge. Get the blank wrong and no amount of good design rescues it, because the verdict is reached by hand, almost instantly, before anyone has read your logo.

Start with how it will actually be worn

Before comparing brands, answer one question honestly: is this a uniform, a gift, or merch?

  • A uniform is worn repeatedly and washed hard. Durability and consistent reordering matter more than fashion, which is why uniforms for cleaning companies get specified around laundering before anything else.
  • A gift is judged on feel the moment it is unwrapped. Spend up here, because perceived quality is the entire point.
  • Merch has to compete with clothes people already own and chose. It needs to be something they would plausibly buy.

These pull in different directions, and trying to buy one garment that serves all three is how companies end up with something nobody is happy with.

The four we stock, and who each is for

Gildan

The volume workhorse. Widely available, consistent, and the most economical route when quantity is high and the garment is closer to a giveaway than a purchase. Choose it when you need a lot of shirts and budget is leading the decision. Do not choose it when the garment itself is the gesture.

Bella+Canvas 3001

A lighter, more fitted modern cut. The Bella+Canvas 3001 tee we print on is the one that reads as contemporary rather than corporate, which makes it a strong choice for younger teams, gyms, studios and anything where you want people to wear it outside work. Sizing runs closer to the body than a classic unisex tee, so tell your team that when you collect sizes.

Comfort Colors 1717

Heavyweight, garment dyed, relaxed. The softest premium option and the one most likely to be mistaken for something bought at retail. The garment dyed finish gives it a lived in character straight away. This is the default when you want a shirt people keep, and it is usually the right answer for gifting. You can look through the full color range on the garment dyed 1717 heavyweight tee, and our guide to the Comfort Colors C1717 goes deeper.

Shaka Wear

Genuine heavyweight with an oversized drape. Choose it when the audience would actively appreciate streetwear weight, not just thickness for its own sake. More in oversized streetwear tees.

Weight is the shorthand people use, but fit decides complaints

Fabric weight gets all the attention because it is the easy number to compare. In practice, fit generates far more complaints than weight does.

A fitted cut on a team that expected a classic unisex tee produces a run of exchange requests. The garment was not wrong, the expectation was. State the cut clearly when you collect sizes and most of that disappears.

Color affects more than you expect

Darker colors hide wear and marks, which matters enormously for hospitality, trades and anything worn through a shift. That is why shirts for HVAC and plumbing crews and shirts for lawn care crews almost always land on a darker fabric. Lighter colors show detail in a print better but show everything else too.

Garment dyed colors have a softer, slightly uneven character by design. That is the look, and it is lovely, but it also means a garment dyed black is not the same flat black as a standard cotton black. If an exact match across pieces matters, say so up front.

Standardise now so reorders are easy later

Whatever you choose, write it down properly: brand, style number, exact colorway. Not "the black one". Later on, the person placing the reorder will not be the person who chose it.

Keeping that spec is what makes a second run match the first. Every job we print runs on our own calibrated equipment, so if the spec is right, the reorder is right. More on that in running a company uniform program.

Order samples before committing

You cannot judge a blank from a product photo. Weight, drape and hand feel do not photograph. Order one of each option you are considering, put them on real people from your team, wash them once, and then decide.

With no minimum order, comparing three blanks costs very little set against the risk of buying two hundred of the wrong one. You can order a single sample garment of each blank on your shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best blank for company t shirts?

The best blank for company apparel is Comfort Colors 1717 when you want something people keep and wear outside work, Bella+Canvas 3001 when you want a lighter modern fit, and Gildan when quantity is high and budget is leading. There is no single best blank, only the best one for how the apparel will actually be worn. Decide the use case first and the brand choice becomes obvious.

Should we choose heavier fabric for staff shirts?

Heavier fabric feels more premium and survives laundering better, but it is also warmer, so it is not automatically the right call. In South Florida that matters for anyone working outdoors or in a kitchen. Match the weight to the environment rather than to the price sheet. Teams on a warehouse floor face the same trade off, which we cover in uniforms built for warehouse and logistics work.

Can we mix different blanks in one order?

Yes, you can mix brands, styles, colors and garment types inside a single order. Direct to garment printing has no per garment setup cost, so combining tees, crewnecks and hoodies carries no penalty. It is common for teams that need different pieces for different roles.

Is there a minimum order for company apparel?

No, there is no minimum order, so you can buy one of each blank you are considering before committing to a full run. That makes sampling the cheapest insurance available on a company apparel decision. Hold the garments, wash one, and then choose.

How do we make sure the next order matches the first?

Record the brand, style number and exact colorway, and reuse the same artwork file for every run. Then reorder against that written spec instead of describing it from memory. A spec that names the garment precisely is what keeps a second run looking like the first.

Not sure which blank is right? Try them.

We stock Gildan, Bella+Canvas, Comfort Colors and Shaka Wear, and we have no minimum order, so you can hold all four before committing a budget to any of them. Tell us how the apparel will be worn and we will recommend honestly.
