Design Your Own Shirt Online: A Step by Step Guide

Design your own shirt online in six moves: pick your shirt, color and size, upload your artwork or type your text, place it, check the live preview on the real shirt color, add a back design if you want one, and check out. One shirt is fine, and it starts at $25. This guide walks through each step in our design your own shirt tool, plus the mistakes we catch most often when files come through the shop in Hollywood, FL.

How do you design your own shirt online?

To design your own shirt online, you choose a shirt and color, add a graphic or text in a browser based designer, position it on the shirt, and approve a live preview before paying. At Imperial Custom Apparel the whole process takes a few minutes, needs no minimum order, and the shirt ships within 2 business days.

Behind the screen, your design becomes a full color DTG print. DTG means direct to garment: water based ink goes straight into the cotton on an industrial Kornit machine, so photos, gradients and any number of colors cost the same as a single color. The ink soaks into the fibers instead of sitting on top as a thick layer, which is why the print feels soft. For this guide, you only need to know that cotton plus a clean file equals a sharp print.

How do you choose a shirt color that suits your design?

Choose a shirt color that contrasts with the main colors in your design, so the art reads from across a room. Pick your shirt, color and size in the designer before you upload anything, because the shirt color decides which artwork colors will pop and which will vanish.

Here is a quick contrast guide we use at the counter:

Main colors in your design Shirt colors that work Shirt colors to test first
Black or navy text and line art White, light gray, pastels, bright colors Black, navy, dark green
White or pale artwork Black, navy, red, royal blue, dark green White, light gray, cream
Bright full color illustration White, black, light gray A shirt in the same color as the art
Photo with dark shadows White, light gray, natural tones Black, where shadows blend into the fabric
Yellow, gold or neon artwork Black, navy, royal blue White, yellow, gold

The fastest way to decide is to upload the art in the shirt designer and click through a few colors in the live preview. If one color makes you squint, skip it.

Should you upload artwork or type text in the designer?

Upload artwork when you already have a graphic, photo or logo you own; type text in the designer when the shirt is mostly words. Uploads accept PNG, JPG and SVG files. The text tool works well for names, dates and short phrases, and you can combine both on the same shirt.

For uploads, the file that prints best is a transparent PNG at 300 dpi, 4500 x 5400 pixels. That size gives the printer more detail than it needs, so edges stay crisp. A JPG works for photos, but it always has a background box, which prints as a rectangle unless the photo is meant to look like one. Our walkthrough on putting a picture on a shirt covers phone photos in detail, and if you are generating art with a chat assistant, see AI t shirt design with ChatGPT, Claude and Canva.

For text only shirts, choose a bold font, keep it large and leave space around it. Our custom text t shirt tips go deeper on fonts and line breaks.

Where should the design go on the shirt?

Most designs go centered on the front, starting about three to four finger widths below the collar. The largest print area is 12 x 16 inches, and you can add a back design in the same order if the shirt needs a second side.

Bigger is not always better. A 12 inch wide design looks bold on a large or extra large shirt, but on a small it can wrap toward the side seams. A good habit is to drag the design to the size that looks right in the preview, then shrink it a little. Try a couple of sizes in our online shirt designer before you settle. For exact pixel and inch numbers by placement, use our t shirt design size guide.

Front and back in one order

Use the front for the main idea and the back for names, numbers or a date. Both print in full color on the same shirt, and the designer updates your price before you pay.

What does the live preview show before you pay?

The live preview shows your artwork on the actual shirt and color you picked, at the size and position you set, before you pay anything. Use it to judge contrast, scale and placement. If something looks off in the preview, it will look off on the shirt, so fix it there.

Three checks we recommend every time:

  1. Zoom out. Look at the preview small, like a person seeing you from across a room. If the main word or shape disappears, make it bigger or bolder.
  2. Check dark parts on dark shirts. Navy text on a black shirt reads as nothing. Swap to a lighter ink color or a lighter shirt.
  3. Read every word out loud. Names, dates and spelling are the one thing a printer cannot guess for you.

What happens after you place your order?

After you order, a real person at our Hollywood, FL shop checks your file before it prints, looking at resolution, transparency and placement. The shirt is then printed in house on our Kornit equipment and ships within 2 business days, or you can pick it up locally in Hollywood.

That file check is called the Imperial File Check, and it is the step that rescues a lot of first time orders. If a photo is too small to print sharp or a background box is hiding behind the art, we reach out before ink touches the shirt. You can also email your file for a free check before you order. Shipping covers anywhere in the US; transit time depends on the carrier and is added after the 2 business days. If an order arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it or refund it.

What mistakes ruin a shirt you design online?

The mistakes that ruin a shirt you design online are small files, hidden backgrounds, low contrast, thin lines and typos. Each one is easy to fix before ordering and nearly impossible to fix after printing, so spend two minutes on this list before checking out.

  • A screenshot instead of the original file. Screenshots are tiny and print soft. Find the original or export a larger version.
  • A white box around the art. On a white shirt nobody notices; on any color it prints as a white rectangle. Save as a transparent PNG.
  • Hairline details. Lines thinner than a pencil line at full size can break up on cotton.
  • Protected art. We do not print trademarked logos, characters or copyrighted art without permission, so use your own art or art you have rights to.
  • Wrong size for the group. When ordering for several people, ask each person their size instead of guessing.

How much does it cost to design your own shirt online with us?

Designing your own shirt online with Imperial Custom Apparel starts at $25 per shirt with a full color front print, with no minimum order. The designer shows your price before you pay, so there are no surprises at checkout.

  • Pick your shirt, color and size in the designer and see it in the live preview.
  • Add a back design for names, numbers or a second graphic if you want one.
  • Printed in house in Hollywood, FL since 2019, checked by a real person, shipped within 2 business days or picked up locally.

When you are ready, open the online shirt designer and build the first one. Ordering a single test shirt before a group order is the smartest $25 you can spend.

Frequently asked questions

Can I design my own shirt online and order just one?

Yes. You can design your own shirt online at Imperial Custom Apparel and order just one, because there is no minimum. A single custom tee with a full color front print is $25, and it ships within 2 business days. Many people order one shirt first as a test before ordering for a group.

What file types can I upload to design a shirt?

The shirt designer accepts PNG, JPG and SVG uploads. The best file for printing is a transparent PNG at 300 dpi, 4500 x 5400 pixels, because it has no background box and plenty of detail. JPG files work for photos but always include a background, which prints unless it is removed.

Will my shirt look exactly like the online preview?

The online preview shows your design on the real shirt and color at the size and position you chose, so it is a reliable guide to the finished shirt. Printed colors on cotton can look slightly softer than a bright screen. A real person also checks every file before printing to catch problems the preview cannot show.

How big can my design be on a custom shirt?

Your design can be up to 12 x 16 inches on a custom shirt. Most designs look best a little smaller than the maximum, especially on small sizes. You can also add a back design in the same order, and the designer shows your price before you pay.
