Every seller evaluating print on demand asks the same question eventually: will the prints crack or fade after a few washes? It is a fair question, because plenty of people have owned a printed shirt that peeled. This post explains DTG print durability honestly, how the ink actually bonds to fabric, what causes premature failure, what you can realistically expect from a well printed garment, and the exact wash care instructions to give your customers.
How DTG ink bonds to the fabric
Start with the mechanism, because it explains everything else. Direct to garment printing uses water based pigment inks that are sprayed onto the garment and absorbed into the fibers, then cured with heat so the pigment is locked in place by a binder that bonds around and into the fibers themselves.
Compare that to the printed shirts most people have seen fail. A heat applied vinyl or a thick transfer is a separate film laid on top of the fabric and glued down. Because it is a discrete layer with its own stiffness, it flexes differently than the shirt does, and eventually it cracks along the fold lines or peels at the corners.
DTG has no separate film to peel, because there is nothing sitting on top to come off. The ink is part of the fabric. That is why a properly cured DTG print does not crack the way a transfer does. It ages by very gradually softening in color, not by breaking apart.
You can feel the difference. A DTG print on a light garment is barely detectable under your fingers, and that soft hand is direct evidence that the ink is in the fabric rather than on it.
Why curing determines everything
Ink chemistry only works if the ink is cured correctly. Curing means bringing the entire ink film to the right temperature for the right duration so the binder fully cross links and locks the pigment to the fibers.
Undercuring is the number one cause of DTG print failure, and it is invisible at the moment of printing. A shirt that was pulled from the heat too soon looks perfect. It photographs perfectly. Then the customer washes it once and the print fades noticeably or the surface goes patchy, because the binder never fully set and the wash simply removes what was not bonded.
This is where equipment separates good printers from bad ones. What actually causes prints to fade early
When a DTG print fails prematurely, it is almost always one of four things.
Undercured ink
Covered above, and the most common cause by far. It shows as significant fading after the very first wash, which is the diagnostic signature. A properly cured print looks essentially identical after wash one.
Entry level equipment and poor pretreatment
Underpowered printers lay ink down less precisely and depend on manually sprayed pretreatment. Uneven pretreatment means the ink does not anchor evenly, so parts of the design wear faster than others. It also produces the visible square or halo around the print that appears after washing.
Harsh washing
Hot water accelerates the breakdown of any printed graphic. Bleach attacks the pigment directly. Aggressive detergents with optical brighteners and heavy agitation abrade the print surface. So does washing a printed garment with heavy items like jeans or towels, where the friction of denim rubbing against the print does real mechanical wear.
High heat drying
Tumble drying on high is harder on prints than washing. The combination of sustained heat and constant tumbling against other fabric is the fastest way to age a graphic. It also shrinks cotton garments, which stresses the printed area as the fabric contracts underneath it.
How long should a DTG print last?
Here is the honest answer, without marketing inflation.
A properly printed and properly cured DTG garment that is washed according to care instructions will keep the print looking strong for the practical life of the shirt. Expect no cracking, no peeling, and no flaking at all. Over many wash cycles you may see a very slight softening of color, most noticeably in deep saturated tones, which reads as the garment looking broken in rather than damaged.
Set expectations with your customers this way:
- Wash one: no visible change in a correctly cured print. If a print fades noticeably here, that is a manufacturing fault, not normal wear, and it should be replaced.
- Ongoing wear: gradual, even softening of color across the whole graphic. Even fading is normal aging. Patchy or cracked areas are not.
- Failure modes to watch for: peeling, flaking, cracking along fold lines, and a visible outline box around the artwork. None of these are characteristic of a correctly produced DTG print.
One thing worth normalizing for buyers: a garment washed in hot water and tumble dried on high every week will age faster than one washed cold and hung dry. That is true of the fabric as much as the print. Care instructions are not a disclaimer, they are how you get the result you are selling.
The wash care instructions to give your customers
Put these on your product page, in your packing insert, and in your post purchase email. Sellers who communicate care instructions get measurably fewer complaints, because most fading reports come from a customer doing something the garment was never going to survive.
- Turn the garment inside out before washing. The single most effective step. It keeps the printed surface from rubbing against the drum and other garments.
- Wash in cold water. Cold preserves both the print and the garment color, and it prevents shrinkage.
- Use a gentle cycle and a mild detergent. Skip the heavy duty settings and anything with brighteners.
- No bleach, and no fabric softener. Bleach destroys pigment. Softener leaves a residue that dulls the print surface over time.
- Wash with similar weights. Keep printed garments away from jeans, zippers, and towels.
- Hang dry, or tumble dry on low. Hang drying is best. If they use a dryer, low heat, and pull the garment while it is still slightly damp.
- Do not iron directly on the print. If pressing is needed, turn the garment inside out and iron the reverse side, or press around the graphic.

Does DTG crack like screen printing?
Cracking is associated with thick plastisol deposits and heat applied transfers, which sit on the surface as a distinct layer and fail along fold lines when that layer is stiffer than the fabric. DTG ink is absorbed into the fibers, so there is no rigid surface layer to crack. A correctly cured DTG print flexes with the garment. Why did my print look faded after the first wash?
Two possibilities. A very slight settling in the first wash is normal, as loose surface pigment and any pretreatment residue rinse away, and it usually makes the print look slightly softer and more integrated with the fabric rather than faded. Significant fading after one wash is not normal. That indicates undercured ink and it is a production defect, so raise it with your printer and expect a replacement.
Do prints last as long on dark garments?
Yes, when they are produced correctly. Dark garments carry more ink because of the white underbase, so they require more curing energy, but a fully cured dark garment print is just as durable as a light one. The care instructions are identical, and turning the garment inside out matters even more on dark colors because the print surface is more exposed to abrasion.
Durability is a production decision, not a method limitation
The reputation DTG carries for fading comes almost entirely from underpowered equipment and rushed curing, not from the method. Handled properly, DTG is a premium printing method: full color, unlimited detail, no minimum quantity, and a soft hand that heavy transfers cannot match.
