Why direct to garment printing fits how businesses actually buy apparel: no colour limits, no setup, size runs without penalty, and small reorders.
Most advice about printing methods is written for people producing merch to sell. Business buyers have a different shape of problem: unpredictable quantities, a brand identity that cannot be approximated, staff who join at awkward times, and a logo that often has a gradient in it. Direct to garment happens to fit that shape unusually well, and it is worth understanding why before you choose a supplier.

Your logo does not cost extra
Screen printing charges by colour, because every colour needs its own physical screen burned and aligned. That is why so much corporate apparel ends up with a flattened, simplified version of the brand mark.
Direct to garment has no screens. The printer reads the file and sprays ink straight into the fabric. A three colour wordmark and a full colour gradient logo cost exactly the same to run.
For a business that is the difference between printing your actual brand and printing an approximation of it. If your identity involves a gradient, a photograph, or more than a couple of colours, this is the single biggest reason DTG suits you. Full comparison in DTG versus screen printing.
Quantities match reality, not thresholds
Business apparel demand is lumpy. You need forty now, twelve when three people join unexpectedly, and two hundred before a conference.
Screen printing's setup cost forces a minimum, so you buy to the threshold rather than the need, and the surplus sits in a cupboard. With no screens there is no setup to amortise, which is why we have no minimum order at all. You buy what you need and come back when you need more.
The practical effect is that unused stock stops being a line in your budget. More on that in is there a minimum order for custom shirts.
Size runs and mixed orders carry no penalty
A real team is not evenly distributed, and it rarely wants one single garment. You might need tees for the warehouse, polos for front of house and hoodies for the field crew, in a spread of sizes.
Because each piece is printed individually from a file, mixing garments, colours, sizes and even separate designs inside one order adds no setup cost. You are not penalised for ordering what you actually need.
Sample first, commit second
This is the part that saves businesses the most money and gets used the least.
A single sample runs on the same equipment, with the same inks, through the same process as a production run. That makes it a genuine preview rather than an indication. You can put it on a real person, wash it, see the colour on the actual fabric under your actual office light, and then sign off a two hundred piece order knowing exactly what arrives.
For anything going to clients or a whole team, that is a very cheap insurance policy. You can print one piece first, and there is more on the habit in ordering a sample before you launch.
It feels like clothing
Water based ink absorbs into the fibers instead of sitting on top as a layer. The print stays soft, flexes with the fabric, and does not develop the stiff plastic panel that makes cheap promotional shirts unpleasant to wear.
That matters commercially, not just aesthetically. Staff apparel that feels bad does not get worn, and apparel that does not get worn is wasted spend. Durability specifics in how durable DTG prints really are.
Where DTG is not the right answer
Worth being straight about the limits.
- Very high volume of a simple design. At large enough quantities on a one or two colour graphic, screen printing's per piece cost eventually drops below DTG. If you are printing thousands of a simple mark, say so and we will tell you honestly.
- Polyester and performance fabrics. DTG is built for cotton and high cotton blends. A technical athletic fabric is better served by DTF transfers, which we also run in house.
- Specialty finishes. Metallics and similar effects are not what this process does.
For the large majority of business apparel, which is cotton tees, crewnecks, hoodies and polos in tens or low hundreds, none of those limits bite. The two tees most staff orders land on are the Bella+Canvas 3001, our lightest cotton tee, and the Comfort Colors C1717 with its heavier hand, and both are high cotton, so both take the print cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Does a multi colour logo cost more to print with DTG?
No, a full colour logo costs the same to print with DTG as a single colour one, because there are no screens and no per colour charge. Gradients, photographs and fine detail all run at the same price as a plain wordmark. Additional print locations are what add cost, not additional colours.
Is DTG durable enough for staff uniforms washed constantly?
Yes, DTG holds up to constant washing because the water based ink bonds into the fibers rather than sitting on the surface as a layer. It does not crack or peel the way heavy transfers do. Wash cold and inside out and a staff shirt stays legible for the life of the garment.
Is DTG more expensive than screen printing?
At low and moderate quantities DTG is usually cheaper than screen printing, because there is no screen setup to pay for. At very high volume on a one or two colour design, screen printing eventually wins on cost per piece. Tell us your quantity and your design and we will say plainly which one fits.
Can you print on polos and hoodies, not just t shirts?
Yes, we print DTG on polos, hoodies, crewnecks and tees in cotton and high cotton blends. For polyester or performance blends we use DTF transfers instead, which we also run in house. Tell us the garment and we will confirm it will take the print before you buy blanks.
Can I order one custom shirt as a sample first?
Yes, there is no minimum order, so a single sample is a normal order. It runs on the same equipment with the same inks as a full production run, so what you hold is exactly what a larger order will look like. Most businesses sample once and then order for the whole team with confidence.
